International Beer Day

Since last week was International Beer Day (Aug. 5), I decided to celebrate by drinking Anchor Steam Beer (one of my favorites). On this day, beer enthusiasts are encouraged to appreciate beer and try something new. So this year, I tried Buffalo Bill’s Orange Blossom Cream Ale and it was not bad. I think I liked it because it was fruity and light. Unfortunately, I expected more cream. But it was great to try something new.

For those of you who don’t know, International Beer Day started in 2007 in Santa Cruz, California. According to the official website, you can celebrate by drinking with friends, enjoying new beers from other cultures, buying beers for your friends, and thanking a brewer and bartender for devoting their lives to beer.

If you didn’t celebrate it this year, make sure you put it on your calendar for next year!!

It’s times like these when I wish I had the option to jump on a plane from New York and fly to Wisconsin. Sprecher Brewing Company, the Wisconsin Beef Council (WBC) and Keg-a-Que are having the third annual Wisconsin State Fair grilling competition, Grilling with Beer. This competition has my name written all over it. I love to grill! If you’re in Glendale, Wisconsin, this is a competition you won’t want to miss.

Here are the details:

The top eight recipes will be pitted against each other with the winner being decided by an expert panel of judges on the stage at State Fair’s Central Mall on August 9. The eight finalists will receive $10 toward purchase of beer and beef for the final cook-off.

Second and third place winners will each receive one case of Sprecher beverages, two Sprecher tour passes, two tickets to Sprecher’s 25th Anniversary Bash, a $25 certificate for beef from the Wisconsin Beef Council, and a portable Keg-a-Que (Awesome!).

The grand prize winner will receive six cases of Sprecher beverages, two Sprecher tour passes, 2 tickets to Sprecher’s 25th Anniversary Bash, a $200 certificate for beef from the Wisconsin Beef Council, and a portable Keg-a-Que (Awesome again!).

Atlanta Beer Week

Atlanta is joining other states around the country by having a week celebrating beer! This week, bars, beverage stores, restaurants, brewpubs and breweries in Atlanta and Athens will be holding dinners, tastings, and seminars.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Crawford Moran brewer of Five Seasons Brewing Co. joined other local beer enthusiasts to plan the first annual Atlanta Beer Week.

“Trying to get anything off the ground is always a challenge but the response has been pretty good,” Moran said. “It’s kind of like the All-Star Game. You have all these people who might be rivals on the same team working together for a week. We have a nice mix of places doing different things and it’s a great foundation to get things going toward next year.”

The week kicked off Sunday at Brick Store Pub with rare beers on draft and a ceremonial cask tapping. The week continues with a five-course beer dinner featuring five different beers aged in wine barrels at Five Seasons Westside on May 20.  For a complete listing, go to www.atlantabeerweek.com.
